Brian Burt, 68, died in his sleep on April 26, 2024 at his residence in Tioga, ND. He was born on Friday, March 2nd, 1956 in Devils Lake, ND, to Glen and Vivian (Snook) Burt; he was the youngest of eight children.
He is survived by his wife, Sandy; and daughter, Cimarron; as well as 4 siblings and his loving friends “out West”. He was preceded in death by his parents and 3 siblings.
Brian began his first career as a farmer at age 9, working alongside his father, Glenn, on the family farm and family custom combining business. As a combiner, he traveled the Great Plains (including Canada) extensively. During his second career, as a long-haul truck driver, he met Sandy, the love of his life, down in Florida. After a whirlwind romance spent traveling the country in his semi, Brian and Sandy returned to North Dakota in 1982 to marry and run the Burt family farm. They welcomed their only child, Cimarron, in 1992; Brian was so enamored with the new addition to the family that he would rush home from the fields during lunch just to see her.
His third career began in the late 90’s with the opening of Burt’s Repair, which was a staple of the Lakota community until it burned down in 2009. After a brief hiatus, he returned to trucking, this time as a driver in the oil industry. Brian enjoyed the camaraderie of his fellow drivers, earning the nickname “Smiley”.
Brian will be remembered for his earnestness, generosity, work ethic, and love of “shooting the bull”.
There will not be a funeral or memorial service; his cremains will be mixed with Sandy’s when she dies and returned to the family farm, where they were happiest. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Lakota Ambulance Service, PO Box 338, Lakota, ND.
