Calvin A. Vincent, Hannaford ND, passed peacefully away at his residence under Hospice care on September 13, 2015.
Calvin Arnold Vincent was born July 31, 1926 in Elgin IL. At a young age he moved with his family to the Wilton MN area, where he lived and worked until early adulthood. Calvin served in the US Army for 2 years in 1945-46. He was stationed in Kobe, Honshu, Japan as a Military Policeman.
After returning from the service Calvin relocated to North Dakota and did several different occupations. He was united in marriage to Alna Marion Larson on September 24, 1950 at West Prairie Lutheran Church, rural Binford, ND.
Calvin started a construction business in Hannaford, ND in the early 60’s. In 1964 he built the building which would house Cal Vincent Construction. He was appointed Mayor of Hannaford in 1962, in 1964 he was elected to the position and continued to serve as the city’s Mayor until the time of his death.
In 1968 Calvin purchased a home in Hannaford and relocated his family there.
He felt the community was in need of a grocery store so in 1969 he purchased the former Knauss Mercantile building and opened Hannaford Supply.
Calvin’s construction business covered a wide area from ND to Texas, MN and MT. Much time was spent away from home on the job. Having no hobbies, work was Cal’s life. During his years in business Cal employed many young men and women, trying to instill in all his work ethic. Having success with some; others not so much. While not known as someone to express his emotions, you knew Cal liked you if he punched your arm and pulled your hair. Those who endured this “love” will remember this sometimes painful, but affectionate trait.
Calvin remained active in his business until 2006 when he underwent open heart surgery. While this slowed him some, he still made daily trips to the shop until the past few years.
A diehard Chevrolet man, a special highlight of Calvin’s life was his part in a Chevrolet commercial featuring him and his 1978 diesel pickup. He was to attend a ceremony in Dallas, TX but was unable to attend because of his heart surgery.
Per Calvin’s wishes his body was donated to the UND School of Medicine. Per Cal’s orders no services will be held. Upon return of Calvin’s remains a private family service will be held for burial of his and Alna’s remains.
The family wishes to extend sincere gratitude to the Drs and nurses at Sanford Clinic and Hospital in Mayville, and the truly wonderful, caring nurses and staff at CHI Home Health/Hospice in Valley City. To our neighbors and friends, your kind words, remembrances of Cal, thoughts and prayers are touching and appreciated!!
