Carl I. Matson, age 81, resident of Grand Forks, ND, formerly of Aneta, ND, died Saturday, December 19, 2015 in the Rehabilitation Unit of Altru Specialty Center in Grand Forks.
Carl Iver Matson was born in Rugh Township of Nelson County, ND, the son of Clifford & Inga (Sherve) Matson on August 9, 1934. He was baptized and confirmed at Sundahl Lutheran Church in Aneta. Carl attended the Rugh Township school and Aneta High School. He served in the US Air Force from April 1, 1957 and was honorably discharged on March 31, 1963, including two years in the reserves. He spent three years in France working as a heavy equipment operator, mechanic, and chauffeur. Carl was employed by the Highland Company for 46 years. Carl married Isabelle (Messner) Frederick Urvand on November 1, 1980 at The Pekin Lutheran Church. Isabelle died on December 18, 2007. He then moved to Grand Forks in 2008 until his death. Carl was a member of the Edward A. Broberg Post #16 American Legion, the Elks, Shriners, Eagles, and Masons. He loved spending time fishing and playing cards.
Carl will be missed by his brother, Roy Matson of Newport, WA; a sister, Linda Lerud of Valley City, ND; 3 stepsons, Robert (Evonne) Frederick of Lakota, ND, Rodney Fredrick of Aneta, ND, and Les (Pam) Urvand of Crosby, ND; 5 stepdaughters, Doreen (Dave) Herrmann of Devils Lake, ND, Darlene (Art) Roberts of Yuma, AZ, Lori (Mark) Johnson of Devils Lake, ND, Lisa (Brad) Hillebrand of Reynolds, ND, and Vickie (Greg) Erickson of Pelican Rapids, MN; 26 step grandchildren; 38 step great-grandchildren; 3 step great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces & nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Isabelle; 3 brothers, Norris Matson, Lawrence Matson, and James Lukins; and a sister Helen Hale.
A Memorial Service for Carl will be held at the Sundahl Lutheran Church of Aneta, ND, on Tuesday, December 29, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. Officiating will be the Reverend Kenneth Iverson. Interment will be at the Silent Hill Cemetery, rural Aneta, in the spring. Visitation will be held at the church on Tuesday, from 1:00 p.m. until the time of service.
