Clifford "Shine" Zimmer

Clifford E. “Shine” Zimmer, age 97, resident of Lakota, ND, died Monday, April 24, 2017 at Valley Eldercare in Grand Forks, ND.

Clifford Everett Zimmer was born December 2, 1919 at Manvel, ND, the son of William and Blanche (Bushaw) Zimmer. He was raised at Manvel until his family moved to Calvin, ND, in 1929. The family moved to Lakota in 1932. Clifford then attended the Lakota Public School where he was active in basketball and football. He graduated Lakota High School in the class of 1939. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy on November 13, 1940 and was honorably discharged on September 23, 1941 at the rank of Seaman 2nd Class. Clifford married his high school sweetheart, Edith Goldammer, on January 29, 1946 in Lakota. They loved dancing together, and made Lakota their home, where they raised their daughter, Cindy. Shine was a rural mail carrier for the U.S. Postal service from 1950 until his retirement in 1980. Edith died in 1989 and Cindy died in 2003. Shine was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, the VFW, and the DAV.

Shine is survived by 3 granddaughters, Lisa (Adam) Moe of Ft. Worth, TX and their children Kaitlyn & Ethan, Ivy (Corey) Thorson of Minot, ND and their children Grant, Tate & Elle, and Bonnie Fast of Bloomington, MN and her son Kingston; son-in-law, Ron Dahl of Minot, ND; brother, Paul (Claudia) Zimmer of Poway, CA; sister, Fern Martin of Bowie, MD; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife; daughter; 4 brothers, Floyd, Leonard, Ambrose, and Ardell; and a sister, Eva Slade.

The Funeral Mass for Shine will be held at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church, Lakota, ND, on Saturday, April 29, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. The Celebrant will be Rev. Fr. Steven J. Meyer, with music provided by the St. Mary Church Choir. Interment will be in the Lakota Cemetery. The casketbearers will be Tom Zimmer, Ron Dahl, Roger Wheeler, Ron Wheeler, Aron Anderson, and Robbin McMorran. Visitation will be held at the Church on Saturday, from 1:00 p.m. until the time of Mass.

Memorials are suggested to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, the Lakota City Library, or St. Mary Catholic Church in Lakota.
