David
Foreng
Jan 31, 1940 — Feb 4, 2026
David Foreng passed away on February 4, 2026 in Arizona.
David Leroy Foreng was born January 31st, 1940 to Howard and Alice (Bolken) Foreng in McVille, ND. David grew up in a Norwegian household and enjoyed farming with his grandfather Kasper, his father, and his uncle Clifford.
He spent his first eight years of schooling at Bergen #2 Country School and then went on to attend Pekin High School, graduating in 1958. He joked that he didn’t remember studying much. Though he clearly remembered playing basketball and baseball with his friends and teammates. He found that his passions were in history, politics and sports.
David enrolled at the University of North Dakota with thoughts of becoming a writer or journalist. After two years, he changed his major to Social Studies and Physical Education. His schooling was interrupted in 1963 when he joined the National Guard, and became a trained medic at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas.
When he returned from training, he resumed his education at UND. In 1965, his father endured a physical injury that called him back to the family farm which paused his education. He was able to continue his education in the early 1970s at NDSU. From there, he was offered the opportunity to teach at McClusky, ND, as well as the head football coach and head girls track coach. The football team went two years undefeated under his coaching, in Class 3 football which was a high honor for him. David also spent three summers managing Stump Lake Resort and Cafe. Grandma Alice worked for him there, as well.
In 1978, his father turned 65, and needed more assistance on the farm. So David moved back home to farm again. He also continued teaching as a substitute teacher and coaching Football for the McVille Blackhawks. In 1985, he married Rita Haas, and the two of them had the “loves of his life”, Brittany (1986) and Lindsey (1988). He also acquired two stepchildren in Christopher and Jayme. He continued to farm until the economy and his parent’s health began to fail.
He was always seeking success, and made humor of his college choices not being monetarily purposeful. He eventually did find his career salvation in sales, when he began his path in insurance at AAA of North Dakota, specializing in Long-term Care Insurance. There he led the majority of the Long Term Care Seminars in North Dakota for 10 years. He moved his experience and specialized brokering with Mutual of Omaha. He gained top 5 status for back to back years, giving him national status and recognition in his field of expertise.
In 2008, he married Sarah Otto which gave him another stepson, Alex. They opened an office in Pekin, ND, his beloved hometown. He resumed business under the “Foreng Insurance” label located on Main Street which gave him much pride to bring some economical value to his community.
His career brought him onto becoming the State Manager of Minnesota and North Dakota for Medicare Supplements. This brought him the opportunity to travel to places he never imagined as a North Dakota Farm boy. Conventions and rewards of sales took his travels to New York, Hilton Head SC, the Caribbean, various Florida destinations, Lake Tahoe, Hawaii, Detroit, Memphis and even a Norwegian cruise.
David took another big step and moved to Fargo in 2012. When life was giving him so many blessings, he gained another in 2014, when he met his current wife, Debra Flieth. He inherited 3 step sons, Jason, Ben, and Christopher from this union. They spent winters at their home in Arizona that they enjoyed the last decade at.
David had a passion for people throughout his life that extended to his work. “When you do what you love, you don’t work a day in your life,” was his favorite saying. Ask him how he enjoyed farming, he would scoff. But, if you asked him how you could help yourself or a loved one in medicare insurance protection, he’d light up and ask what he could do to help. That was always his goal in his career. David’s parents weren’t granted this opportunity, so he worked until his final years educating and helping people learn what was available to them.
David is survived by his wife Deb (Flieth), daughters Brittany Foreng (Joe), Sioux Falls, Lindsey Foreng, Seattle, stepsons Jason, Ben and Chris, granddaughter Hayden Foreng and step-grandchildren Haddie, Hallee, Peighton and Rehder.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Dianne and brother-in-law James Walsh, his niece Becky (Walsh) Emerson, his great nieces Breanna (Schoeck) Bechtold and Hayley Waldvogel, and his great nephew Matt Walsh.
