Donald Walter Mootz was born September 14, 1928 at Devils Lake, ND, the son of Walter A. and Mary K. (Geritz) Mootz. Shortly afterwards, the family moved to the Lakota area. Don was raised and attended school in Lakota, graduating from Lakota High School in 1946. He then attended Jamestown College and the University of Minnesota. He returned to Lakota in 1948 to help his ailing father in business. Don married Lorraine Lillian Larson on February 6, 1954 at St. Mary's Cathedral in Fargo, ND. In 1963 they purchased the family business. Lorraine died October 16, 1994. Don served in the past on the Lakota City Council and St. Mary's Church Council. He was a charter member of the Knights of Columbus Council 6007 at Lakota and a life member of the Knights of Columbus Fourth Degree Assembly 792 of Devils Lake. Don married Madeline Schmidt in 1999. Don really enjoyed dancing, if the band was good, he would dance every night.
Don is survived by his wife, Madeline; 2 sons, Matthew Mootz & wife B.R. Listen of Jamestown, ND and Jeffrey Mootz & wife Rita of Hillsboro, ND; 5 grandchildren, Emily Mootz of Devils Lake, Rebecca (Gabriel) Carlson of Crystal, ND, Christopher Mootz of Fargo, Graham (Kaylee) Mootz of Fargo, and Justin (Amy) Mootz of Hillsboro; 8 great grandchildren, Linus, Agnes, Edmond, and Ambrose Carlson, Anna, Anthony, Josiah, and Noah Mootz; a brother, James Mootz & wife Shirley of Winona, MN; and several nieces and nephews. Don will be greatly missed.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Lorraine; and a sister, Donna Kinney.
Don's Funeral Mass will be held at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in Lakota, ND, on Tuesday, January 14, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. Interment will be in the spring at the Lakota Cemetery . Visitation will be held at the Aaker Funeral Home of Lakota on Monday beginning at 4:00 p.m. with a Vigil & Rosary Service at 6:00 p.m. Visitation will continue at the Church on Tuesday for one hour prior to Mass.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the St. Mary Catholic Church Building Fund or the Lakota City Library.
