Donald F. Sloan, age 95, resident of Lakota, ND, died Friday, November 18, 2011 at his home in Lakota.

Donald Francis Sloan was born April 3, 1916 at Lakota, ND, the son of Edward and Carrie (Henning) Sloan. He was raised there and graduated from Lakota High School in 1934. Don married Mary Cartwright on September 8, 1938 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Lakota. Don was inducted into the U.S. Army on February 2, 1943 at Ft. Snelling , MN . He served in the European, African Middle Eastern, and Pacific Theaters. He was separated from service at Ft. Lewis, WA on January 25, 1946. He re-enlisted with the Army on December 1, 1950 and served until July 14, 1951, when he was honorably discharged at Camp Attisburg , IN at the rank of Sergeant. Don was elected Mayor of Lakota in 1952 and served until 1972. He was elected a Nelson County Commissioner in 1974 and served through 1994. He served on the Administrative Committee on Veterans Affairs under Gov. Bill Guy and Gov. Arthur Link for 12 years. Don joined the American Legion in 1946 and has been an active member ever since. He served as 2 nd District Commander and Eastern North Dakota Commander, as well as most offices in the Rundell-Holicky Post #21 of Lakota. Over the years, Don was owner of Don's Tap Room, Don's Recreation, and Donald Sloan Insurance Agency, all in Lakota.

Don's family includes 2 sons, Gerald (Elaine) Cartwright of Sedro Woolley, WA, and James Sloan of Lakota, ND; 1 daughter, Teresa (Roger) Rohrer of Minot, ND; 10 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; 1 sister, Patricia (Bob) Lamb of Michigan, ND; 1 sister-in-law, Lois Sloan of Burlingame, CA; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Mary; 4 brothers, Edward, Thomas, John "Jack", and Richard "Dick"; 2 sisters, Caroline and Marlene "Molly"; and a grandson, Todd Cartwright.

The Funeral Mass for Donald Sloan will be held at St. Mary Catholic Church of Lakota on Tuesday, November 22, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. Interment will be in the Lakota Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the Aaker Funeral Home of Lakota on Monday beginning at 4:00 p.m. with a Rosary & Vigil Service at 7:00 p.m. Visitation will continue at the Church on Tuesday, beginning at 10:00 a.m. until the time of Mass.
