Dorothy A. Haugen

Dorothy A. Haugen, age 95, lifelong resident of Michigan, ND, died Sunday, February 5, 2017 at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, ND.

Dorothy Ann Berdahl was born April 10, 1921 near Michigan, ND, the daughter of Ole and Almeda (Fontaine) Berdahl. She was raised on a farm north of town and attended the Michigan Township country school. Dorothy married Alvin Haugen on November 3, 1947 in Michigan, where they made their home, raised their family, and lived their married live together. She held many jobs cooking in restaurants and the school. She was famous for her pies and lefse, she also made wedding cakes for many years. She was talented at sewing, crocheting, ceramics, and she loved to dance. She was an American Legion Auxiliary member and was awarded a 50 year pin. Alvin died on May 18, 1991. Dorothy continued living in Michigan until she moved to the Good Samaritan Society at Lakota in September of 2014.

Dorothy will be missed by her 4 children, Dawn (Robert) Godwin of West Yellowstone, MT, Mike (Elaine) Haugen of Michigan, Cathy Brueckner of Niagara, ND, and Holly (Kevin) Rothwell of Westminster, CO; daughter-in-law, Paulette “P.J.” Haugen of McVille, ND; 9 grandchildren, Shelly Roningen (special friend, Eric Wald), Penny (Duane) Lippert, Jayson Haugen, Bryan (Leana) Haugen, Shandy (Mike) Hatlestad, Brittany (Nick) Hemmingsen, Tanner (Amber) Brueckner, Cody Brueckner (special friend, Judy Rogers), and Rachael (Josh) Hilsinger; 12 great-grandchildren; a sister, Donna Johnson of Moline, IL; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Al Haugen; a son, Alvin Jay Haugen; son-in-law, Gary Brueckner; 2 sisters, Daisy Laud and MaryAnn Flem; and a brother, Clayton Berdahl.

The Funeral Mass for Dorothy will be held at St. Lawrence O’Toole Catholic Church of Michigan, on Friday, February 10, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. Interment will be in the spring at the Michigan Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the Aaker Funeral Home of Lakota on Thursday, beginning at 5:00 p.m. with a Vigil and Rosary Service at 7:00 p.m. Visitation will continue at the Church on Friday, from 10:00 a.m. until the time of Mass.
