Ellsworth J. Sundre

Ellsworth J. Sundre, age 89, resident of Grand Forks, ND, formerly of Petersburg, ND, died Sunday, March 29, 2015 at Woodside Village in Grand Forks.

Ellsworth James Sundre was born November 15, 1925 on his parent’s farm in Field Township of Nelson County, ND, the son of T.O. and Florence (Hanson) Sundre. He was raised on the farm and attended the Field Township School. He farmed for a short time before enlisting in the U.S. Army on January 11, 1945. He was honorably discharged on November 28, 1946 and returned to the area, working as an auto mechanic, eventually settling in Petersburg. Ellsworth married June Severson on June 26, 1955. They raised their family of four and he worked at Petersburg Supply Co. In 1984 he purchased the business from Arne Erickson. Most recently, Ellsworth and June resided in Grand Forks. He enjoyed fishing, UND hockey games, reading, and playing cards. He served on the Petersburg Lutheran Church Council and the Petersburg City Council. Ellsworth served as custodian of the church for many years. He also was a lifetime member of the John Larson American Legion Post #247 at Petersburg.

Ellsworth will be deeply missed by his wife, June Sundre of Grand Forks; 4 children, Kathleen (Richard) McWaters of Grand Forks, Karyn (Evan) Schoenfish of Bettendorf, IA, Barbara (Byron) Verbitsky of Poynette, WI, and Kevin (Lynae) Sundre of Petersburg; 8 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; a sister, Vivian Hamre of Lisbon, ND; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Clayton; brother-in-law, Roger Hamre; and nephew, Steve Hamre.

A Memorial Service for Ellsworth will be held at the Petersburg Lutheran Church on Wednesday, April 1, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. Interment will be in the Petersburg Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the church on Tuesday, beginning at 5:00 p.m. with a Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m. Visitation will continue at the church on Wednesday, from 12:00 p.m. until the time of service.
