Esther (Colbert) Sandbeck, 98, of Aneta , N.D. and Parkwood Place in Grand Forks , N.D. , passed away on June 26, 2009 at the Merit Care Palliative Care Unit in Fargo , N.D.

Esther was born on Easter Sunday, April 16, 1911 , the daughter of Leo and Mary (Welling) Colbert of Aneta, N.D. Esther attended all of her school years at Aneta before attending Mayville Normal (now M.S.U.) where she received her teaching certificate. She started her teaching career in a country school near Richardton , N.D. and later taught country school in Nelson and Grand Forks counties.

Esther married Lawrence Sandbeck of Aneta on June 26, 1937 . The couple spent several years in Washington state before returning to the Aneta - Kloten area where they farmed for many years. They built a home in Aneta in 1975 and continued their interest in farming until Lawrence 's death in 1994.

Esther was a very ambitious lady who, besides helping on the farm, was a Tupperware salesperson in the 1960's and clerked part-time in a local grocery store. She was also an active participant in Sundahl Lutheran Church , school and civic organizations.

Esther is survived by her 2 children, Jerry (Lola) Sandbeck of Fargo, N.D. and Connie (James) Haakenson of Tucson, AZ.

6 grandchildren; Lynn Sandbeck, Jeff Sandbeck and Joni Sandbeck (Steve) Webster; Timothy (Jill) Haakenson, Stephen (Jennifer) Haakenson and Christine Haakenson.

7 great grandchildren; Taylor and Alex Webster, Paige and Garrett Haakenson and Madelyn, Samuel and Benjamin Haakenson.

Sister; Geraldine Beglau, and many nieces and nephews.

Esther was preceded in death by her parents, husband and 2 brothers, Leo and Raymond.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Sundahl Lutheran Church , Aneta , N.D.

Visitation will be held on Monday, June 29, 2009 from 4 P.M. to 7 P.M. with prayer service at 7 P.M. at the Stanley - Iverson Funeral Home, McVille, N.D and continue one hour prior to services in the church.

Funeral services for Esther will be held on Tuesday, June 30, 2009

At 11 A.M. in the Sundahl Lutheran Church , Aneta , N.D.

Interment will be in the Silent Hill Cemetery , Aneta , N.D.
