Harriet Engebretson

Harriet Ellen (Gullickson) Engebretson, 91, of McVille, ND died Friday, November 28, 2014 in McVille, ND.

Harriet was born April 17, 1923 in Portland, North Dakota the 3rd of 4 children born to Ed and Alma Gullickson. Harriet grew up in Portland and upon graduation from High School attended Mayville State Teachers College where she received a teacher's degree. She taught elementary school at Gackle and Lakota before accepting a teaching position in McVille where she met Silas (Si) Engebretson. They were married on December 28, 1947 and were wed for 65 years. During their years on a farm north of McVille, Harriet and Si had 4 children. Si and Harriet loved to dance and many summer evenings found them enjoying the dances at Stump Lake and Red Willow. They also spent many happy winters in Weslaco, TX.

Harriet later went back to Mayville State College where she received her teaching degree while also managing a household and continuing her teaching career. Harriet's conversation included the Norwegian words "Uffda" and "Mange Takk" and an invitation for coffee. Harriet was active in the women's activities of the Lutheran Churches where they lived and was a long time member of PEO.

Harriet is survived by her 4 children; Mary (Jerry), Dean (Trudy), Sharry (Craig), and Paul (Diane); 9 grandchildren, Justin, Tore, Adam, Andrew, Philip, Michael, Amy, Brian, and Kayla; 7 great grandchildren, Dylan, Kaia, Suzanna, Charles, Charlotte, Zoey and Brooklyn.

Funeral services for Harriet will be held Wednesday, December 3, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. in the McVille Lutheran Church, McVille, ND. Visitation will begin at the church one hour prior to services. Interment will be in the spring at the McVille Cemetery.
