Obituary

Harvey Duane Schmidt, 75, formerly of Petersburg, North Dakota, passed away on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, in Apache Junction, Arizona, in one of his favorite places—his shop.

Harvey was born on August 11, 1951, in Berlin, Wisconsin, the son of Kenneth J. Schmidt and Gilma Schmidt (Georgeson). He grew up with his siblings, Dianne, Donna, and Victor Schmidt.

On May 27, 1972, Harvey married Bonnie Jean Anton at Dahlen Lutheran Church. Together, they built a life centered around family, hard work, travel, and shared adventures. They were blessed with two children, Sheila and Scott.

Harvey and Bonnie lived in Grand Forks and Cando before returning to Petersburg, North Dakota, where they purchased the former Cenex station and operated B & H Café, Service Center and Upholstery. Harvey spent many years working at the service station and became a familiar part of the Petersburg community.

Harvey had a lifelong love of classic cars. He especially enjoyed restoring them, spending time in his shop, and participating in car shows. His shop was more than simply a place to work—it was where he could spend hours doing what he loved.

Later in life, Harvey and Bonnie purchased a motor home and traveled throughout the country, eventually making Apache Junction, Arizona, their home. Bonnie passed away on November 15, 2003 at age 50.

Harvey later met Kathy Webb at East Mesa Baptist Church. The two were married on July 7, 2006, in Grand Forks, North Dakota. Harvey and Kathy shared a love of traveling and attending car shows together. Harvey was a talented lifelong mechanic and retired in 2010 after many years of doing the work he loved.

Harvey was preceded in death by his wife, Bonnie Jean Schmidt; his daughter, Sheila Schmidt Lund; his brother, Victor Schmidt; his parents, Kenneth J. and Gilma Schmidt; father-in-law, William Anton; his nephew, Jared A. Horejsi; as well as numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Harvey is survived by his wife, Kathy Schmidt; his son, Scott Dwaine Schmidt (Keri); his son-in-law, Jeff Lund; his granddaughter, Grace Ray (Nick), his sisters, Dianne and Donna Schmidt; his uncle, Ervie Schmidt (Judy); his aunt, Janice Schmidt; his mother-in-law, Beverly Anton; sister-in-law Karen Horejsi; brother-in-law Wally Horejsi; Kathy’s children, Rhonda Webb (David) and Corey Davis (Teah) and Kathy’s grandchildren, Kate Webb and Lilly Webb; and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.

Harvey will be remembered for his hard-working nature, his knowledge and love of classic cars, and the countless hours he spent restoring vehicles and enjoying time in his shop.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 7, 2026, at East Mesa Baptist Church in Mesa, Arizona, at 11am.

A graveside memorial service and burial will take place at Petersburg Cemetery in Petersburg, North Dakota, in the spring of 2027. The exact date will be announced at a later time.
