James J. Herda, age 92, resident of Lakota, ND, died Thursday, June 6, 2013 at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, ND.
James Joseph Herda was born September 26, 1920 in Sauter Township of Walsh County, ND, the son of Albert and Anna (Klug) Herda. He was raised on his parent's farm and educated in the area, graduating from Whitman High School in 1939. He was a farmer all of his life in Sauter Township. James married Marian D. Bina on October 28, 1946 at St. Catherine Catholic Church, Lomice, near Lawton, ND. They farmed and raised their family together on the family homestead. James was a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus, a member of ZCBJ Lodge - Kosobud #106 at Lankin, ND , a founding member of Tri County Water District from January 1972 until November 2004, and he was the Secretary/Treasurer of St. Catherine's Lomice Cemetery board. James and Marian moved to Lakota in 1993. Marian died April 27, 2004 . James loved playing cards and watching television, especially the Price is Right, the Polka Party on Wednesday and Saturday on RFDTV, and the Minnesota Twins. He loved going to Devils Lake for repairs and a haircut, always bringing extra change with, but he thoroughly loved having grandchildren and great grandchildren over to visit.
James will be deeply missed by his 4 children, Beverly Herda of Lake Crystal, MN, Barbara Herda of Billings, MT, Debbie Bodnar of Ham Lake, MN, and Jim (significant other, Tonya) Herda of Lawton, ND; 7 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; 1 sister, Mabel Shirek of Lakota; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Marian; 2 brothers, Alvin and George; and 2 sisters, Blanche Barrett and Alice Truitt.
The Funeral Mass will be held at St. Mary Catholic Church of Lakota on Monday, June 10, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. The Celebrant will be Rev. Fr. Steven Meyer. Music will be provided by the St. Mary Church Choir, Barbara Johnson is the organist. Burial will be in the WFLA-Kosobud Cemetery, rural Lankin. The casketbearers will be Terry Kubat, Dennis Anderson, John Vasichek, David Herda, Kevin Matejcek, and David Matejcek. The honorary bearers will be Ted Matejcek, George Bina, Daniel Kouba, Gordon Matejcek, and Daniel Shirek. Visitation will be held at the Aaker Funeral Home of Lakota on Sunday, beginning at 3:00 p.m. with a Vigil Service at 7:00 p.m. Visitation will continue at the Church on Monday, beginning at 9:30 a.m. until the time of Mass.
