James W. Miller, age 97, resident of Brocket, ND, died Saturday, September 26, 2015 at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, ND.
James Wallace Miller was born April 6, 1918 in Sauter Township of Walsh County, ND, the son of James C. and Mary (Klug) Miller. As a young boy he moved with his family to Brocket, ND, where he graduated from high school. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy on January 27, 1942. He served during World War II and was honorably discharged on December 4, 1945. James married Marian Pederson on August 27, 1947. They moved to Brocket to make their home and purchased the hardware store from Jim’s father, J. C. Miller. Jim and Marian then opened a café and bar in Brocket. They left the business for a time to operate the Dairy Queen at Lakota in 1959, and then lived and worked in Grand Forks, before returning to Brocket in 1962 to re-open the café and bar. Around 1967 they closed the café and devoted their time to “Miller’s Bar”. Jim was a long time member of the Brocket American Legion, of which he was the oldest member and the last World War II veteran.
James will be deeply missed by his wife, Marian; 5 children, Shirley Kleven, Alan (Laverne) Miller, Randy (Lisa) Miller, Lori (Bruce) Anderson, and Shari (Mark) Gisvold; 9 grandchildren; 1 step-great granddaughter; 1 sister, Beatrice Ducharme; 2 brothers, Archie Miller and Ralph (Gen) Miller; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; son-in-law, Allen Kleven; and sister, Dorothy LeDuc.
A private service will be held for the family.
