James Eugene Smith, age 78, of Fargo, ND, formerly Aneta, ND died Thursday, July 17, 2014 at the Sheyenne Care Center in Valley City, ND.

Jim was born on November 23, 1935 to Alvin and Violet (Johnson) Smith. He grew up near Aneta and helped on the family farm. He graduated from Aneta High School, where he competed in several varsity sports. He attended Mayville State College and then enlisted in the United States Army. After proudly serving his country, he returned home to North Dakota to work on the family farm. For the past several years Jim made his home in Fargo, ND.

Jim enjoyed golfing with his friends, playing cards, and being a golf instructor. He especially loved to teach children how to golf, and loved to design and fabricate custom golf club sets for friends and customers. Many winters, Jim traveled to Texas and Nevada with his brother, Gary, to enjoy the golfing and warmer weather. Most of all, he was very proud of being a North Dakota farmer.

Jim is survived by his sister Connie Hall of Lincoln, NE; two daughters Deidre and Nikki; and two nieces Taunja and Tausha.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Gary and his brother-in-law, Bob Hall.

Graveside services for Jim will be held Saturday, August 2, 2014 at 11:00AM in the Silent Hill Cemetery located near Aneta, ND. Memorials are preferred to the Silent Hill Cemetery or the Sundahl Lutheran Church.
