Janet was born in Grafton, ND, to Fred and Jean Skaro on October 3, 1941, along with her twin sister Judy. She attended Hoople public schools, sophomore year in Fargo and junior/senior years at Grand Forks Central High School. She did not graduate with her twin sister because of a bout with Multiple Sclerosis, which required hospitalization, during her senior year. She earned her GED after her recovery and went on to attend Aaker Business College in East Grand Forks, Mn.
On August 19, 1962, Janet married Dennis Winkler. Janet worked as a secretary and teacher’s aide at the Lakota Elementary School for several years. She was a devoted wife and mother and raised two children before her MS returned in 1987. Janet loved listening to music, especially Elvis Presley, Barry Manilow and Neil Diamond. Janet also enjoyed pottery classes, baking for her family and gardening with her husband, Dennis. Janet loved being a grandmother and thoroughly enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren whenever possible. She lived at home until she broke her ankle and had to move to the Lakota Nursing Home in 2012. In 2014 she was relocated to the NCHS Care Center in McVille, ND. Her husband Dennis visited her almost every day until his passing in 2021.
Janet was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Dennis. She is survived by her twin sister Judy Braaten and younger sisters Sue Senger and Deana Hartje and her brother Kim Skaro; her children Andrea Nock (Tim) of Westminster, CO and Darin Winkler (Lisa) of Grand Forks, ND; her grandchildren Kelso Kubat, Justin Kubat, Zachary Winkler, Alexis Winkler and Maximus Winkler, and great grandchildren Daxton Winkler and Bexlee Winkler.
