Jim D. Smaaland

James “Jim” Davis Smaaland, age 62, of Aneta, ND, passed peacefully in his home surrounded by his loving family on Thursday, June 2, 2016.

Jim was born November 14, 1953 in McVille, ND, the son of Maynard and Mildred (Olson) Smaaland. He grew up in the Aneta area and graduated from Aneta High School in 1971. After school he entered the United States Army and served 2 years in Germany. After an honorable discharge, Jim returned home where he worked for area farmers and in manufacturing. On October 11, 1975 he married Audrey Skjolden at Sundahl Lutheran Church in Aneta. In the early 80s, Jim graduated from auctioneering school and worked at many local auctions. In 1987, the couple and children moved to Thompson, ND where Jim worked in sales for various companies. Jim and Audrey moved to Aneta in 2013 for retirement.

Jim enjoyed fishing and hunting. He was an avid card player. He took pride in his home and yard, and loved spending time visiting and laughing with family and friends.

Jim is survived by his wife Audrey of Aneta; children Cory (Sherry Serr) Carlson of Aneta, Angela (Dan) Odegaard of Aneta and Tracey (Heath) Thompson of Ypsilanti, ND; grandchildren Andrew Thompson, Dylan Thompson, Eric Dalman, Lorianne Odegaard, Wesley Odegaard and Leesa Carlson; brothers Terry Smaaland, Larry (Karen) Smaaland and Ken (Kelly) Smaaland; sister Cindy (Link) Thompson; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents; and nephew Davis Smaaland.

Funeral services will be held Monday, June 6, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. in Sundahl Lutheran Church, Aneta, ND. Visitation will be Sunday, June 5, 2016 beginning at 5 p.m. with a prayer service at 7 p.m. at Sundahl Lutheran Church. Interment will be at the Silent Hill Cemetery, Aneta, ND. Military honors will be by Edward A. Broberg American Legion Post 16, Aneta, ND and the Military Funeral Honors Team.
