John Harvey Schmidt, 70, of Michigan, ND, died peacefully with family by his side on Sunday, July 6, 2014 at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, ND.
John, son of Harold and Gertrude (Bales) Schmidt, was born January 22, 1944 in Grand Forks. He was raised on a farm south of Michigan, ND and graduated from Michigan High School in 1962. He served in the U.S. Army, being stationed in Fort Hood, Texas. John was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in Michigan. He married the love of his life, Connie Quick, on January 11, 1969 at Michigan Lutheran Church. They made their home on the family farm where he continued to do his life passion of farming until they moved into Michigan in 1995. John was employed at the Michigan Implement as the main truck driver until he retired in May of 2010.
John is survived by his wife of 45 years, Connie; three daughters, Tamra (Shane McCullough) of Fargo, ND and their children Misty, Timothy, Landan, Hunter, and Addison; Tanya (Steve Madson) of Hillsboro, ND and their children Morgan, Jacob, and Paul; Tessa (Jon Varnson) of Lakota, ND and their children Jaden and Cole; three great-grandchildren, Charlie, Tylan, and Damon; three sisters, Marlys (Larry Hoverson) of Petersburg, ND, Sharen (Wendell Johnson) of Le Mars, IA, and Sylvia (Greg Daws) of Michigan, ND; four brothers, Milton (Marlys) of Petersburg, ND, Darryl (Wanda) of Alexandria, MN, Dwayne (Kathie) of Bismarck, ND, and James (Annette) of Petersburg, ND. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews, and great-nieces & nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Sandra and Cynthia.
He will be deeply missed by his family and all of his friends.
The Funeral Service will be held at Michigan Lutheran Church on Friday, July 11, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. Officiating will be Reverend Barb Koenig. The organist will be Paula Narum and the soloist will be Lonnie Gestson. Interment will be in the Michigan Cemetery. Serving as casketbearers will be Ervy Schmidt, Marvin Narum, Paul Ringdahl, Jack Donaghy, Ken Hietala, and Lonnie Anderson. Military honors will be accorded by the John Larson American Legion Post #247 of Petersburg and the ND Military Funeral Honors Team. Visitation will be held at the church on Thursday, beginning at 5:00 p.m. with a Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m. Visitation will continue on Friday for one hour prior to the service.
