Jon Ray Boman, 65, of West Fargo, ND, passed away April 7, 2012 at the VA Hospital in Fargo.

Jon was born August 9, 1946, at Grafton, ND, to Emil and Gladys (Lotof) Boman of Adams, ND. He grew up on the family farm near Adams. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. He graduated from Adams High School in 1964. He enlisted in the US Army in January of 1966, was a Radioman, 4 th Infantry Division and served two tours of duty in Vietnam. After his discharge in 1968, he enrolled in Mayville State University, Mayville, ND, and received a BS degree in science. Jon then enlisted in the US Navy in 1974 and served as a Navigation Supervisor, US Submarine Service, aboard the nuclear submarine USS Casimir Pulaski, sailing between New London, CT, and Holy Loch, Scotland. After discharge from the Navy in 1980, he taught science at Crazy Horse School, Wanblee, SD, on the Pine Ridge Reservation for 26 years. He had a summer home in the Black Hills of SD near Custer. He attended summer school at the University of South Dakota , Vermillion, SD, and received Masters' degrees in biology and physics. He was an Upward Bound instructor at the University of SD, Vermillion, during the summer for five years. His final year of teaching was at Wakpala High School, Wakpala, SD for the 2006-2007 school year. He retired due to failing health and moved to West Fargo, ND, to be near family and health care facilities. Jon was a member of VFW, DAV, National Assoc. of Physics Teachers, University of SD Alumni Assoc., and Boston Red Sox fan club. Jon enjoyed listening to classical music. He was an avid reader, and one of his last requests was for a book from the VA Hospital library. Education was a priority for him, both teaching and learning. As his health failed, he spent more time in the hospital and in December 2011 he entered the Veterans Home at Lisbon, ND, and it became "Home" for him.

Jon is survived by his sisters and brothers-in-law Bob and Joan Halberg, Lakota, ND, Roman and Joy Horejsi, Park Rapids, MN, and William Lester, Tonawanda, NY. Nephews: Michael (Brooke) Horejsi, Maple Lake, MN, Dean (Caren) Horejsi, Maple Grove, MN, and Dan Halberg (special friend Donna Clauson), Lakota, ND. Nieces: Lori (Bruce) Hendrickx, Ottertail, MN, Michele (Jon) Taylor, Park Rapids, MN, Mary Halberg (fiancé Rob Day), Fargo, ND, Suzanne (Scott) Wagner, Tonawanda, NY, and Sheryl (Gary) Garippo, Tonawanda, NY. Several great-nieces and nephews as well as cousins and friends also survive.

He was preceded in death by his parents and sister Judith Lester.

A Memorial Service will be held at the North Dakota Veterans Home at Lisbon, ND, on April 14, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Kirk Douglas officiating. Burial will also be at Lisbon.
