Judith "Judy" Norma (Locken) Fladeland

Judy Fladeland died 22 August 2008 after a long and courageous battle with cancer. A memorial service will be held Wednesday, 27 August 2008 at 2:00 p.m. at Aneta Parkview Health Center, Aneta, ND. Burial will be at Silent Hill Cemetery, Aneta, ND.

Judy was born 22 February 1923 to Peter and Johannah (Fjogstad) Locken, the fourth of six children. She was born in her grandparent's home. The house, which is over 100 years old, is still standing in Aneta. She was very proud of her Norwegian and Lutheran heritage.

Judy attended grade and high school in Aneta where she was active in band and other school and church activities. After graduation from high school, she moved to Chicago, Illinois, where she enrolled in the Deaconess School of Nursing.

On 9 October 1943, in Sarasota, Florida, she married a young man from Kloten, North Dakota, F. Leland "Lee" Fladeland. They lived on a number of military bases throughout the United States, while Lee served in the Army Air Corps during WWII and the Korean conflict. Finally they settled down in Fargo, North Dakota, and lived there together until Lee died in December 1985. In 1996, Judy moved to Bismarck to be near family and lived there until this year when she became a resident of Aneta Parkview Health Center.

While in Fargo, in addition to being an extraordinary mother, wife and homemaker, she worked for a number of years at the Fargo Clinic, as a technician in cardiology, and as a volunteer at the Veterans Hospital. In addition to raising two sons, who were, as she would say, "her pride and joy," she kept busy during the summer working on her manicured lawn and all of the flowers in her yard. Judy was also an avid bridge player and belonged to many clubs. The game helped to keep her mind acutely nimble throughout her lifetime.

She is survived by her two sons, Michael (Diane), Bismarck, and Marley (Patty), Tacoma, Washington; one sister, Anez (Richard) Thompson, Aneta; and one brother, Peter (Anna Lea) Locken, Eagle Lake, Minnesota and Harlingen, Texas. She also had 6 grandchildren, Lisa, Lee, Matt, Tony, Sarah, and Joe, and 5 great grandchildren, Nicole, Jayden, Ariana, Austin, and Willow, in addition to beloved nieces and nephews.

Judy was preceded in death by her parents, her loving husband, 3 sisters, Marge Olstad, Sally Gibbons, and Pearl Ahee, and 2 nieces, Andrea Davis and Winnie Gibbons.

In accordance with Judy's wishes, the family asks that memorials go to Aneta Parkview Health Center, Aneta, North Dakota, St. Alexius Hospice Care, Bismarck, North Dakota, or Red River Hospice, Fargo North Dakota.
