June L. Burkland, age 86, resident of Lakota, ND, died Saturday, October 4, 2014 at Bethany on University in Fargo, ND.
June Lavon Belyea was born in the Lakota area on November 19, 1927, the daughter of Harry and Lois (Benshoof) Belyea. She was raised and educated in Lakota, graduating with the class of 1946. June married Leonard E. Burkland on January 18, 1947 at Bemidji, MN. They lived and raised their family on the Burkland family farmstead in Wamduska Township of Nelson County. Leonard & June farmed and spent most of their life in the Stump Lake area. They retired from farming and moved to Lakota in 1993. Leonard died July 4, 2002. June continued living in Lakota, where she was a member of the Lakota Senior Citizens Club and the United Church of Christ, serving as a Deaconess. She enjoyed playing cards and baking, especially lefse, buns, and Christmas goodies. While living on the farm she had a big garden and did lots of canning. She was a past member of the Home Benefit Homemakers Club.
June will be greatly missed by her 4 daughters, Connie (Michael) Hayden of West Fargo, ND, Cheryl Hageberg of Lisbon, ND, Sandra (Loren) Messner of Fargo, ND, and Patricia (David) Peterson of West Fargo, ND; 8 grandchildren, Darren Hayden, Christopher Hayden, Michelle Novacek, Ronda Hageberg, Chad Hageberg, Shannon Messner, Jason Peterson, and Jennifer Vandal; 9 great-grandchildren, Eric Brace, Addison and Alivia Peterson, Jackson and Christian Hayden, Elisabeth, Alaina, and Luke Hayden, and Ruby Ruen; 2 brothers, Allen (Colleen) Belyea of Larimore, ND, and Jack Belyea of Indianapolis, IN; a brother-in-law, Verdun (Evelyn) Burkland of Lakota; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brother, Dean Belyea; son-in-law, Clinton Hageberg; and 2 grandchildren, Derrick Hayden and Kelsey Peterson.
The Funeral Service will be held at the United Church of Christ, Lakota, on Wednesday, October 8, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. Officiating will be the Reverend Barb Koenig. The organist will be Ellen Pederson and the soloist will be Nancy Steinmann. Interment will be in the Lakota Cemetery. The casketbearers will be June's grandchildren, and the honorary casketbearers will be June's great-grandchildren. Visitation will be held at the Aaker Funeral Home, Lakota, on Tuesday, beginning at 5:00 p.m. with a Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m. Visitation will continue at the church on Wednesday, from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service.
