Pastor Kenneth C. Iverson, 93, of Hampden, ND, entered Eternity on March 23, 2026, at Altru Hospital in Devils Lake, ND.
Ken was born on August 22, 1932, in Ardmore, IN, to Kenneth Virgil Hinz and Dorothy E. Bauslin Hinz. He attended school in Ardmore until his mother and he moved to El Paso, TX, where Dorothy later met and married Mentor H. Iverson who adopted Ken and gave him the Iverson name. They lived in Idaho before moving to Hampden, ND, where they lived the majority of their lives.
Ken attended school in Hampden with a year at Oak Grove Lutheran School in Fargo, ND, returning to Hampden graduating with the class of 1950. He attended the universities of North Dakota and also Toledo, OH, before enlisting in the U.S. Air Force. While he was stationed at Lowry AFB, Denver, CO, he met and married the love of his life, Velma Lou Scott of Williston, ND. Ken was transferred to Great Falls AFB, MT, where two children were born to them. He actively served his country in the Air Force for 4 years followed by 4 years in the Inactive Reserves.
In 1957, after Ken’s honorable discharge from the military, he moved his family to Hampden where he farmed with his wife for 38 years and added two more children to the fold. Ken was very active in the Hampden community serving on the school board, as official scorekeeper for the basketball games and 23 years as a bus driver. He served on the Faith Lutheran Church council and as Sunday School superintendent. One of his favorite roles was as the Boy Scout Leader of Troop 135. He spent 8 years in Toastmasters and was a life member of the BPO Elks lodge #1216 and the American Legion Post 266 in Hampden.
Ken accepted his call to ministry in his early 60’s following in the footsteps of his maternal grandfather and great-grandfather who were Lutheran pastors in Ohio and Pennsylvania. He studied at Luther Seminary in St. Paul, MN, and interned under Pastor Erik Johnson serving the High Plains Parish and living in Fairdale, ND. He was ordained at the age of 65 in the church where he and Velma were charter members, Faith Lutheran in Hampden. He accepted a call to serve as chaplain in the Lutheran Home and the Good Samaritan Home in Devils Lake for 5 ½ years. At this time Ken accepted the call to serve a two-point parish in Aneta, ND: Sundahl in town and Ottawa in the country. He loved these congregations and served them for the next 15 years. In 2018 Ken semi-retired to Lakota where he continued to serve his Lord through various Bible studies and filling in for area pastors as needed.
In 2023, Velma fell and broke her hip, requiring her to move to the Good Samaritan Society in Lakota where Ken sat faithfully by her side all day, every day, setting a high standard for his family to follow. One year later Ken suffered a heart event that sent him to the Good Sam where he and Velma shared a double room until his death.
Ken is survived by his wife, Velma; his children, Pamela (Curtis) Landsem of Edmore, ND, Kenneth E. of Starkweather, ND, Robert (Theresa) of Boise, ID, and Nick (Michele) of the Hampden/Starkweather area; 13 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; one brother, David (Deborah) of Carnation, WA; several nieces and nephews; a special cousin, Robert Etchen and many family in-laws. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Shirley Farland and a brother, Richard. Ken was widely known, dearly loved and will be deeply missed.
