Lawrence J. Matejcek, age 101, resident of Brocket, ND, died Saturday, February 7, 2015 at the Nelson County Health System Hospital in McVille, ND.
Lawrence John Matejcek was born February 7, 1914 on his parent’s farm in Sauter Township of Walsh County, ND, the son of William Sr. and Magdalena (Vasichek) Matejcek. He was raised on the farm and attended the Sauter School. Lawrence had been a school bus driver years ago when it consisted of a horse and wagon. He farmed east of Brocket for 58 years. In 1942 Lawrence purchased the Standard gas station and serviced cars in Brocket and also serviced equipment in farmer’s fields. He was united in marriage to Mildred Kosobud on June 24, 1946. He also sold cars for Boehmer Chevrolet in Edmore and Rydell Chevrolet in Grand Forks. Lawrence was a 75 year member of the WFLA Kosobud Lodge #106. His hobbies included whittling, woodworking, drawing, dancing, and he was the master of Ole & Lena jokes. Lawrence was an excellent mechanic that serviced everyone in the area.
Lawrence will be greatly missed by his wife of 68 years, Mildred Matejcek of Brocket, ND; 3 children, Carol & her husband Dwight Bump of Albany, WI, Shirley Morgen of Brocket, ND, and Dennis Matejcek & his girlfriend Darlene of Grand Forks, ND; 4 grandchildren, Stefanie & her husband Brian Kontny, Brandon & his wife Cami Broe, Jason & his wife Kelly Morgen, and Lindsay Matejcek; 9 great-grandchildren, Bella, Kye, Ian, Tanner, Aalina, Christopher, Zachery, Kylen, and Cambria; 2 step-great-grandchildren, MaKayla and Caitlyn. Lawrence was very special to his grandchildren. Visiting grandpa was a highlight, because it was so much fun!
He was preceded in death by a son, Darrell Matejcek; a sister, Evelyn Skalicky; 2 brothers, Edward and William; sister-in-law, Alice Matejcek; brother-in-law, Herman Kosobud; and nephew, Maynard Matejcek.
Lawrence’s Funeral Service will be held at United Lutheran Church, Brocket, ND, on Friday, February 13, 2015 at 12:00 p.m. Officiating will be the Reverend Don Reynolds. Visitation will be held at the church on Friday, from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service. Interment will be in the spring at the WFLA Kosobud Cemetery, rural Lankin, ND.
