Lona M. Rossi, age 96, resident of rural Michigan , ND, died Saturday, March 2, 2013 at the Nelson County Health System Care Center in McVille, ND.
Lona May Whitehead was born March 22, 1916 at Brownville, Maine, the daughter of Harold and Muriel (Parker Bailey) Whitehead. She was raised there until she moved to England with her parents in 1929. She attended school there and attended finishing school in Switzerland. During World War II she drove an ambulance for the British Army. Lona married Frank Rossi on December 24, 1945. In 1946 they came to America, where Lona was a housewife and mother. She became a proponent for animal rights in her later years. She moved to North Dakota in 1989 and settled near Michigan. The farm she lived on was her dream come true.
She was preceded in death by 2 sons, Phillip and Michael; and her parents.
She leaves behind her son, Frank Rossi III of Pompano Beach, FL; 2 daughters, Maria Rossi LeBlanc and Sarah Rossi Parsons, both of Grand Forks, ND; 8 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; and 1 great great grandchild.
Lona has donated her body to the UND Medical School for anatomical study. No services are scheduled at this time.
Memorials in memory of Lona may be given to the Circle of Friends Humane Society in Grand Forks, ND.
