Mabel Marie Herda was born February 26, 1918 on her parent's farm in Sauter Township of Walsh County, ND, the daughter of Albert and Annie (Klug) Herda. She was raised there, attended the Sauter Township School, and helped on the family farm. Mabel married Daniel Joseph Shirek on November 10, 1943 at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, Bechyne. They lived in Alabama until Daniel was discharged from the U.S. Army. In 1948 they moved to Brocket, ND. Mabel was a postal clerk in Brocket for many years. Mabel and Daniel traveled as often as they could, to visit their family. In 2001 they moved to the Prairie Rose apartments in Lakota. Daniel died April 25, 2006. Mabel continued living there, where she thoroughly enjoyed baking and sharing this talent with her friends and family. She enjoyed spending time with her family, as she greatly loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Mabel was a member of the Royal O. Gray American Legion Auxiliary of Brocket for 65 years, St. Joseph Catholic Church in Brocket, and most recently, St. Mary Catholic Church in Lakota.
Mabel will be greatly missed by her 2 daughters, Julie (Terry) Nelson of Colorado Springs, CO and Jackie (David) Jepsen of Gig Harbor, WA; 4 granddaughters, Holly (Justin) Pauly of Denver, CO, Brooke (Adam) Diffendal of Aurora, CO, Jillian (James) Harrington of San Clemente, CA, and Danielle (Shawn) O'Leary of Gig Harbor, WA; 4 great-grandchildren, Morgan, Garrett, Mason, and Lauren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Daniel; 3 brothers, Alvin, George, and James; and 2 sisters, Blanche Barrett and Alice Truitt.
Mabel's Funeral Mass will be held at St. Mary Catholic Church in Lakota on Thursday, October 31, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. Interment will be at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Brocket. Visitation will be held at the Aaker Funeral Home in Lakota on Wednesday, beginning at 4:00 p.m. with a Vigil Service at 7:00 p.m. Visitation will continue at the Church on Thursday, from 9:30 a.m. until the time of Mass.
Memorials are suggested to the Lakota Volunteer Ambulance Service or St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery in Brocket.
