Marvin J. Hanson

Marvin J. Hanson, age 87, resident of Michigan, ND, died Friday, March 3, 2017 at the Good Samaritan Society in Lakota, ND.

Marvin Joseph Hanson was born the youngest child of Iver and Anna Marie (Haugen) Hanson on June 20, 1929 north of Mapes, ND in Rubin Township on the family farm. He attended Mapes Consolidated School through the 8th grade. His family purchased land and buildings then moved to Williams Township. Marvin then attended Lakota High School, graduating in 1948. Marvin studied for 2 years, primarily in welding, at the ND State School of Science at Wahpeton. Later, he used that information on the farm when fixing machinery. Several times Marvin went to Tacoma, WA, where his family lived, to spend winters with them. While there, he was employed by a fire department and Boeing, working as a riveter. Come spring he was anxious to go home to farm. Marvin was a veteran of the U.S. Army, entering the service on February 13, 1953. He was sent to Ft. Sheridan, IL and then to Germany. He served with the 77th Engineering Construction Battalion working as a heavy equipment operator with a tractor, scraper, and dozer in the 6th Armored Division during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged on February 4, 1955 with the rank of Corporal. Marvin was united in marriage to Mildred Sparks on June 20, 1964 in the United Church of Christ at Lakota. The happily married couple lived on the Hanson farm in Williams Township. Marvin had land to farm, a few Holstein cows to milk, and a herd of Black Angus beef cattle. Milly was busy with house and yard work, loved to bake, and had a vegetable garden. Marvin loved hunting, fishing, and woodworking. He had a farm machinery auction sale in 1997. They then moved into Michigan, ND.

Marvin will be deeply missed by his wife, Mildred Hanson; brother-in-law, Leroy Sparks and his 2 daughters, Nancy (Brandon) Galde & Mary (Brian) Schmidt, and their children Hannah, Erik & Brooklyn Galde and Jase & Breanne Schmidt; Marvin also has 10 nephews, Steve, Jeff, Jon, Bob, Donald, David, Dale, Wayne, Roger, and John; 14 nieces, Joan, Arlet, Cherlyn, Sherry, Julie, Sharon, Janice, Kathleen, Linda, Elaine, Carolyn, Maureen, Glorian, and Judy; and several great-nieces & nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; 4 sisters, Mildred Haug, Helene Bartlett, Vivian Janzen, and Ida Phelan; 2 brothers, Rudolph and Palmer; and a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Lois & Bud Burgess.

The Funeral Service for Marvin will be held at the Michigan Lutheran Church, Michigan, ND, on Thursday, March 9, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. Officiating will be the Reverend Barb Koenig. The organist will be Sharon Young, the soloist will be David Paukert, and a special message from Sue Mackey. Interment will be in the spring at the Michigan Cemetery. The casketbearers will be Richard Young, Rod Crommett, O’Neal Johnson, David Kalinoski, Allan Anderson, Elwood Jorde, and K. Thor Thompson. Military Honors will be provided by the W.L. Cowper American Legion Post #238 of Michigan. Visitation will be held at the church on Thursday, beginning at 10:00 a.m. until the time of service.
