Maryadele Knudson

Maryadele Florence (Moss) Knudson age 93 of McVille, ND, went to be with her Lord and Savior Monday October 6, 2014.

Maryadele was born in St. Paul Park, MN on August 7, 1921 to Richard and Barbara (Stevens) Moss. She grew up in St. Paul Park , graduating from Park High School in 1939. It was during her high school years, while attending Park Church of God, that Maryadele received Jesus Christ as her Savior.

After graduation, Maryadele attended Mounds Midway School of Nursing in St. Paul, graduating with her RN degree in 1942. Following her graduation she worked in the hospital and it was while working here that she met Melvin J. Knudson. On January 1, 1946 they were married in St Paul Park , MN and soon began their life together farming north of Aneta, ND.

While living on the farm next to a Norwegian community, was a new and exciting life for a city girl, who did not know any Norwegian, Maryadele quickly adapted. She and Melvin farmed north of Aneta from 1946 to 1958. Shortly after they began farming, Maryadele took on the challenge of teaching for two years in the one room schoolhouse located two miles north of their farm. She often commented how during those two years she felt she learned more from her students than they learned from her, plus it opened up an opportunity to develop many new friendships with families in the community. In 1958 they purchased a farm north of McVille. They farmed here from 1958 until they retired from the farm in 1978.

During her life in Nelson County, Maryadele found ways to put her nursing degree to work, as she worked in area hospitals located in McVille, Michigan, and Devils Lake. She also worked for a time as nurse and later the administrator at the McVille Nursing Home (now called Nelson County Healthcare Center ). It was during five of these years, Melvin and Maryadele moved to Oregon for the winter to get away from the cold. While in Oregon , she worked at Salem Memorial Hospital and the hospital in Medford Oregon. No matter where the hospital was located, Maryadele loved the night shift and often had the position of night supervisor. When asked why, she would respond-pay differential, patients sleeping and no doctors.

Maryadele loved to be involved in numerous activities and found herself active in Homemakers, PTA, Women's Way, American Cancer Society, Senior Citizens and when her hair began to gray, the Silver Haired Legislature. During her spare time, Maryadele loved to sew, knit, crochet, and quilt. Her children and grandchildren have many items made with her hands.

Maryadele is survived by her son Glenn (Roberta) Knudson Fargo, ND, two daughters Lovera (Dennis) Dosch Powers Lake, ND, Vernes (Jay) Bjornstad Sharpsburg, GA. Eleven grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband Melvin J. Knudson, her parents Richard and Barbara Moss, her sisters Bonnie Erkkela and Patsy Moss.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Monday October 13, 2014 at New Luther Valley Lutheran Church, McVille, ND. Interment will be in Our Savior's Lutheran Church Cemetery, rural McVille, ND.
