Richard L. Trappen, 83, of Lakota, ND passed away Tuesday, December 31, 2013 at his home after a courageous battle with cancer.

He was born September 5, 1930 , to Jacob and Rose (Schuster) Trappen, at Tintah, MN. He graduated from Tintah High School in 1948. In high school he played basketball and football. On September 11, 1951 he married Muriel ( Loop ), Campbell, MN. Richard was employed at Great Northern for five years, and was later employed by Cargill, Inc. for 35 years. He worked as assistant manager for the Cargill elevator in Breckenridge, MN, the elevator Manager at Echo and Hardwick, MN, and assistant manager in Lakota, ND for 22 years at which time he retired in 1992.

In his free time he enjoyed hunting, fishing, treasure hunting, wood crafts, and was an avid Lakota Raider's fan.

Richard is survived by his wife, Muriel (Loop) Trappen, Lakota, ND; sons, Joseph Trappen and Mara, Upland, CA, Michael Trappen and wife Kari (Voight), Beulah, ND, Patrick Trappen and wife Vicki (Clute), Wahpeton, ND, Jon Trappen and wife Dawn (Berend), Ramsey, MN, and Anthony Trappen, Fargo, ND; daughters, Margaret "Peggy" Peters and husband Roger, Devils Lake, ND, and Annette Handeland and husband Todd, Dayton, MN; grandchildren, Jeremiah Broughton, Melissa Peters, Troy Peters and wife Kortney, Paulette Peters, Wendy Gendreau and husband Andy, Travis Trappen, Jessica Springer and husband Carl, Richard P. Trappen and wife Ashley, Samuel Trappen, Benjamin Trappen, Zachary Trappen and fiancé Jenna, Lindsey Trappen, Heather Biwer, Corbin Handeland, Emma Handeland, Ian Handeland, and Kyler Handeland; great grandchildren, Courtland Wirtz, Evan Peters, Addison, Trapper, Harmyn Gendreau, Charlie Springer, Jack Springer, and Blake Trappen; sister, Rose Ann Wallace and husband Bruce; sister-in-law, Delores Westerbur; and brother-in-law, Norman Bacon.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Mary Cooper and husband Leo; mother and father-in-law, Harley and Margaret Loop; sisters-in-law, Virginia Bacon, Irene Twiss, Donna Westbrook, and Alta Hoepfer and husband Fred; brother-in-law Melvin Westerbur; and grandson, David Peters.

A Christian Burial Mass will be held at 10:00 am, Friday, January 3, 2014 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Lakota, ND. Rev. Fr. Steven J. Meyer will be officiating. Burial will be at the Lakota Cemetery in the Spring. Friends may visit from 4:00 p.m. Thursday, January 2, 2014 at the Aaker Funeral Home, Lakota, ND with Rosary at 7:00pm.
