Robert "Bob" Voss

December 14, 1921 — July 1, 2016

Robert “Bob” K. Voss died surrounded by his family on July 1, 2016, at Elim Care Center in Fargo, ND. He was the youngest of five children born to Mary (Bunze) and August Voss on December 14, 1921 in rural Wilkin County, MN.

Bob attended country school and worked on the family farm until enlisting in the Army in 1942. He served during World War II as an Army Ranger for the 81st Wildcat Division fighting for his country on the island of Peleliu and the Philippines. While serving his country, he was designated to receive the Bronze Star for bravery for rescuing fellow soldiers. Because Army records were destroyed in a fire, Bob never received his Bronze Star until 2005 when it was presented to him by Senator Byron Dorgan.

After returning from the war, Bob met Rosemary Meyer and they were married at St. John’s Church in Wahpeton, ND, on June 3, 1947. They had six children; Pat, Richard, Deb, Kathy, Jane, and David.

Bob spent his career working first at the Farmers Union in Fairmount, ND, until 1960 when he moved to Lakota, ND, and worked as a Marketing Representative for Cenex. He retired in 1983. After retirement, Bob worked part time at the Aaker Funeral Home in Lakota.

He spent many years enjoying fishing at his lake home at West McDonald, golfing, and fighting his never-ending war with the squirrels that ravished his bird feeders.

Bob is survived by his wife of 69 years, Rosemary of Fargo, ND; his children, Pat Schroeder, Deb Voss, Jane (Leonard) Voss, David Voss all of Fargo, ND, Kathy (Rick) Schmidt of Lakota, ND, and Richard (Terry, deceased) Voss of Dent, MN. He is also survived by grandchildren, Jon (Christina) Schroeder of Piedmont, CA, Bryan (Beth) Voss of Rockford, MN, Travis (Brandi) Schmidt of Lakota, ND, Kevin (Lauren) Voss of Boise, ID, Katie (Tina) Schmidt of Moorhead, MN, Taylor (Jessica) Voss of Fargo, ND, and Lincoln Voss of Fargo, ND; two great grandchildren, Rider Schmidt of Lakota, ND and Landon Schroeder of Piedmont, CA; and three step-great grandchildren, Montana & Briar Halberg of Lakota, ND, and Rhett Halberg of Fargo, ND.

He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter-in-law, Terry Voss; three brothers, August, Clifford, and Wilbur “Pete”; and one sister, Ilene Getchell.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Holy Cross Catholic Church, West Fargo, ND, on Thursday, July 7, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. Visitation will be for one hour prior to Mass. The Committal Service will be held at the Lakota Cemetery, Lakota, ND, on Saturday, July 9, 2016 at 12:00 p.m.
