Scott Miles Burthold, 57, returned to his heavenly home on October 19, 2016, after a valiant battle with a long illness. His devotion to his family and his firm belief in God supported him in his struggle and ultimately gave him peace.

Scott was born in Devils Lake, ND on March 1, 1959 to Miles and Astrid. Scott grew up in his hometown of Pekin, ND where he was baptized and confirmed at Pekin Lutheran Church. Scott graduated from Tolna High School, where he excelled in sports and developed lifelong friendships. Scott joined the United States Marine Corps in 1977. Upon entering the service, he fulfilled a lifelong dream of serving his country. Scott returned to North Dakota after completing his service and began attending North Dakota State University. He was a diehard Bison fan and enjoyed cheering on the Bison to five National Championships.

Scott had an aptitude for growing friendships. His genuine personality allowed him to motivate people, which cultivated itself into a career in management. Scott worked for more than thirty years in the steel building industry and was instrumental in developing plants throughout the country. Moving frequently, Scott eventually found himself settling in Houston, TX. There he took pride in his involvement with Alcoholics Anonymous and considered the members not only friends, but his second family. Working as a sponsor, Scott committed himself to helping others reach sobriety.

Scott enjoyed hunting, golfing, and many other outdoor activities. He was an extremely devoted father to his son Cash and the pair considered themselves to be more than father and son, but best friends. Scott’s love for his family not only extended to his son, but also to his nieces, nephews, and grandchildren.

Scott is preceded in death by his father, Miles Burthold of Pekin, ND. He is survived by his mother, Astrid Burthold of McVille, ND; and siblings, Ron (Margo) Burthold of Pekin, ND, Peggy (Dwight) Olson of Litchville, ND, and Dennis Burthold of Bismarck, ND. Scott is also survived by his son, Cash (Leanne) Burthold of Sale City, GA; beloved nieces and nephews; and seven grandchildren.

A Memorial Service will be held at American Lutheran Church in Tolna, ND, on Saturday, October 29, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Sunshine Hospitality Home of Grand Forks, ND or the Nelson County Health Services Foundation or charity of their choice.
