Shirley Ann Ferguson (Schonhardt) 74, of Lakota, ND, passed away peacefully on Monday, September 8, 2025, with loving family by her side.

Shirley was born on November 2, 1950, to Alyce (Solberg) and O.J. Schonhardt in Breckenridge, MN. She grew up in Mooreton, ND, and was the second-born child. She will be greatly missed by her siblings, Darlene (Larry) Rowlette of Columbia, South Carolina and Tim (Sue) Schonhardt of Ottertail, MN, along with her nephews, Jeff, Charlie, and Ryan, and her niece Kayla.

Shirley graduated from Wahpeton High School in 1968 and attended her first two years of college at North Dakota State College of Science in Wahpeton, ND, before completing her teaching degree at Valley City State College in 1972. She began her career in education with two years of teaching in Dickinson, ND. On June 8, 1974, Shirley married Robert (Bob) Ferguson and moved to Lakota, where she continued teaching for another 40 years.

Shirley and Bob raised two sons, Dan (Naomi) Ferguson and Lee (Amanda) Ferguson, and were blessed with four grandchildren: Brandt, Beau, Coltyn, and Hannah.

Over the years, Shirley expressed her love through gardening, hosting, baking, and cooking for others. She cherished summer trips with family and friends in the Ottertail, MN lakes area. Shirley lived her life guided by Christian values and gave generously to her friends, family, and community. Her friendships were deep and enduring-her friends truly became extended family.

In retirement, Shirley continued substitute teaching, worked at Rock Creek Golf Course, and served on the Stump Lake Pioneer Village Board. A devoted Catholic, she inspired many with her unwavering faith.

Four years ago, Shirley and Bob began spending winters in the South, where Shirley fulfilled a long-time dream of substitute teaching in Arizona.

In accordance with Shirley's wishes, no formal services will be held. Memorials in her honor may be directed to the many places in her community that she loved and supported throughout her life including Saint Mary's Catholic Church of Lakota, Lakota Public Schools Backpack Food Program, and Pioneer Village at Stump Lake, ND.
