Steven W. Nies

Steven W. Nies, age 68, resident of Michigan, ND, and Mesa, AZ, died Tuesday, August 22, 2017 at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, ND.

Steven Wesley Nies was born September 17, 1948 in Eureka, South Dakota, the son of Harold and Mildred (Bader) Nies. He was raised and attended school in Wishek, ND, graduating in 1966. He then went to Valley City State and earned his education degree. Steve married Connie Lehr in 1969. Together they had two children, Dawn and Brent. Steve married Deb Braathen in 1991 and brought three step sons into his life, Christopher, Eric, and Nicholas. Steve worked at the Ward County Auxiliary Sheriff’s Department and then worked for Central Mutual for 24 years. He was the president for numerous organizations including; FFA, Norseman MC Motorcycle Club, Rugby Chamber of Commerce, KC & Eagles in Rugby, and on several board of directors. He was a member of the Lay Ministry. At the time of Steve’s death, Deb and he owned the Alamosa Economy Campground, in Alamosa, CO. He loved golfing, playing shuffle board, and Bunco. Most of all, Steve loved being a grandpa.

Steve will be deeply missed by his wife, Deb; children, Dawn DeTraz, Bismarck, ND, Brent Nies, Alamosa, CO, Christopher O’ Brien, Michigan, ND, Eric (Yvette) O’ Brien La Jara, CO, and Nick (Alyssa) O’ Brien Monte Vista, CO; grandchildren, Andrew, Sierra, Arriana, Tristyn, Jack, Justin, Justine, Brad; 3 great grandchildren; mother, Mildred Nies, Wishek, ND; brothers, James Nies, Mesa, AZ, Dwight Nies, Alexander, ND, and Craig (Gale) Nies, Dundee, OR; and several nieces and nephews.

Steve is preceded in death by his father, grandparents, and sister, Deb.

The Memorial Service for Steve will be held at Michigan Lutheran Church on Saturday, August 26, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. Officiating will be Pastor Robert Stover. The family considers the Norseman MC Motorcycle Club to be the honorary pallbearers. Visitation will be held at the church from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service.
