Valborg Rice, age 89, resident of Edmore, ND, died Monday, March 23, 2009 at the Park River Good Samaritan Center in Park River, ND.


Valborg Hjelmstad was born March 8, 1920, the daughter of Peder L. and Beret (Silrum) Hjelmstad at the family homestead in Shepherd Township of Walsh County, ND. She attended elementary school there later attended high school in Park River. She was baptized and confirmed in the Christian faith at Vang Lutheran Church in the same area. Valborg married Harvey Rice on November 29, 1942 and moved with him to Newland Township of Ramsey County. She worked on the farm and for neighbors in the area. Val transferred her church membership to St. Hans Lutheran and became a member of the church and ladies aid. She taught Sunday School there for a number of years. When St. Hans Lutheran dissolved in 1979, she became a member of Concordia Lutheran Church and its’ WELCA. Val was also a member of the Edmore Senior Citizens and Community Club, and a life member of the Sons of Norway of Devils Lake, Heim Lodge # 178. She enjoyed baking and bringing goodies to her children and grandchildren. Harvey passed away January 18, 1991. Val continued living at her home in Edmore, and at the Edmore Memorial Rest Home until she moved to the Good Samaritan Center on February 27, 2009.


Valborg will be greatly missed by her son, Corwyn & his wife Joyce Rice of Edmore; her daughter, Valerie & her husband Ross Sensiba of Devils Lake, ND; 3 grandchildren, Kyla Rice of St. Cloud, MN, Megan & her husband Lance Schill of Langdon, ND, and Landon Rice of Edmore; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Harvey; 5 brothers, Thoralf, Louie, Arnie, Jerome, and Bjarne; and 4 sisters, Inga, Anne, Alma, and Emelie.

Valborg’s Funeral Service will be held at the Concordia Lutheran Church of Edmore, ND, on Saturday, March 28, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. Officiating will be the Reverend Don Reynolds. The organist will be John Martinson and special music will be provided by Kyla Rice and the High Plains Trio. Interment will be in the spring at St. Hans Lutheran Cemetery, rural Edmore. Val’s family will serve as casketbearers. Visitation will be held at the Aaker Funeral Home of Lakota, ND, on Friday, March 27, 2009 beginning at 6:00 p.m. with a Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m. Visitation will continue at the church on Saturday, from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service.
