Obituary

Vance Earl Halvorson, born in 1951, passed away July 13th, 2026, shortly before what would have been his 75th birthday on July 31st. He leaves behind a lifetime of memories as a beloved son, brother, uncle, loyal friend, devoted animal lover, and one-of-a-kind storyteller.

Vance grew up with a mischievous spirit and a talent for keeping life interesting. As his siblings would tell you, he thoroughly enjoyed picking on them as children-and, if we're being honest, that habit continued well into adulthood. His teasing was always part of his charm, and those who knew him best understood it as one of the many ways he showed affection.

Music was one of Vance's lifelong passions. It began in high school alongside his friend David Risinger, when he taught himself to play House of the Rising Sun. He never lost his love for music and always believed that someday he might become famous. Whether he was playing, listening, or sharing stories, music remained a part of who he was.

Growing up, Vance was never short on adventures. Family members still laugh remembering the day their pony, Black Beauty, took off across a thistle-filled pasture with his sister Sherry aboard, refusing to come back. It fell to Vance to walk through the weeds and lead them both safely home-a story that became part of family lore.

After high school, Vance spent many years living in Loveland, Colorado, before returning to his hometown of Tolna. Not everyone comes back home, but Vance did. He remained deeply connected to his roots, his family, and the stories of those who came before him. Blessed with a remarkable memory, he loved sharing tales of the old days and recounting family history and ancestry in vivid detail.

Each Christmas Eve, family could count on hearing from Vance. Unless he happened to drift off to sleep first, he would call to visit, raise a holiday cheer, and wish his big sister Sherry a happy birthday. Those calls became a cherished tradition.

Vance was also known for his appreciation of lutefisk and for enthusiastically explaining its origins in great detail-stories that never seemed to get old. His enthusiasm for the things he loved was contagious.

Animals held a special place in Vance's heart. He deeply loved his dogs and horses, especially his beloved horse King and his faithful riding companion, Max.

Vance was preceded in death by his parents, V.K. and Joyce Halvorson, and his sister, Toni Halvorson.

He is survived by his sister, Sherry (Halvorson) Walen and her husband Don Walen; his brother, Corey Halvorson and wife Deb Halvorson; his niece, Tawnya McVicker and 2 daughters Sienna and Dakota; his nephews: Chad Walen and 2 daughters Brie and Rylee; Aaron and Anna Halvorson and 2 kids Grace and Thomas, and Paul and Amanda Halvorson; along with many extended family members and friends.

Vance's life was filled with music, memories, stories, motorcycles, laughter, and a unique way of seeing the world. His loud motorcycle, legendary storytelling, and unforgettable personality brought color to the lives of everyone around him.

Vance and all his uniqueness will be deeply missed. His stories, music, memories, and larger-than-life presence may be gone, but the laughter and love he shared will live on in the hearts of those who knew him.

Tolna will never be the same.

Rest easy, Vance, and rock on.
